Going through an MRI exam for the first time can make you nervous. Here’s a list of tips on how to get ready before the test. Knowing what to expect will help you handle the process much better and lessen any worries you may have.
Bring Your Documents
If your doctor requested the scan, bring that order with you when you head over to the open MRI center for your appointment.
You May Be Sedated
Your test may include you getting sedated. Learn more about that when you talk to the nurse or your doctor for instructions.
You Can Drink and Eat
Unless you are having an MRCP exam, you can eat and drink before the test. You may also take your medication. However, be sure to inform your doctor about the types of medication you’re on. Your doctor needs to know just in case the medication may conflict with the sedative.
You’ll Fill Up a Patient History Form
Inform the doctor if you have any allergies. Have you had surgeries in the past? Be sure to provide all that information in the form. Lack of information from patient histories can blindside a doctor. To ensure the test happens without any problems, be upfront about any medical conditions you have, too.
You Should Remove Metal Items
The MRI machine is like a giant magnet. Remove anything on you that may have metal like your watch, hair clip, and even hearing aids. If you have dentures, take them out, too. Your credit cards may be erased when you bring that with you into the MRI room, so keep them in the car or with family that you’re bringing along.
You Could Choose an Open MRI
There are medical facilities that provide an open MRI machine for patients. If you’re claustrophobic or don’t want to be in a tight space, book an appointment at those facilities.
