Tips on storage of your goods

There are times when a family has to move to a new home which unfortunately, is not yet ready for their occupancy. This can be the result of a delay in the construction if it’s a new home or perhaps the schedules between those who are moving at both ends do not mesh and one family has to leave their home before the family they purchased their new home from. Whatever the cause, there will be a call for movers and storage in NYC.

There are many reasons that furniture storage may be needed. It can be that the house or apartment you are moving into simply isn’t large enough to hold everything you own; maybe you have inherited the home of your recently deceased parents and you want to save their possessions for the future; whatever the reason there are things you need to know about storage.

If you are making a move and your new home is not ready then the moving company will normally have a facility that can be used to store your property. Although it may be a little more expensive to use movers and storage in NYC from the same company, the convenience will be well worth it. One of the keys to storage is how and when you might have access to your goods in the event you have to reclaim something.

How much storage space is normal?

If storage is something that cannot be avoided then you need to consider a few things:

  • Do I need all the stuff that I have collected over the years?

  • If I dispose of the stuff I have not used for ages, will I miss it or not?

  • When was the last time I used this stuff?

  • Does the stuff that I rarely touch have value, either emotional or financial?

If the answer to these questions is a resounding no, then you can weed it out as you begin to organize your home for packing. In many cases these items can be converted into cash in a big garage sale and those things that are left, donate them or trash it.

Storage companies have been doing this for a long time and they have standards that help them and you come up with a price for storage. If you are leaving a small, one bedroom home you may only need 500 cubic feet for everything. If on the other hand you are leaving a four bedroom home, your storage needs will come closer to 2000 cubic feet.
