Day Treatment Programs Provide Intense Substance Abuse Therapy

by | May 6, 2013 | Health

Day treatment programs, also called partial hospitalization programs, are offered to individuals who want the chance to be around family and friends while receiving substance abuse treatment. Unlike a residential treatment center where people stay for weeks or months at a time without much contact with friends and family, partial hospitalization allows individuals to return home after treatment and have the support of those they love. This type of program is beneficial for those trying to reintegrate into a normal routine while still receiving treatment and those who need to save on costs when seeking treatment.

Who Is Eligible for Partial Hospitalization?

Not every person dealing with substance abuse is a good candidate for day treatment programs. Anyone who is a danger to themselves or others, or who is having severe struggles trying to cope with the daily routine of life, is not a good fit for a day treatment program. This type of program is designed for individuals who have completed treatment at a residential center and want to transition to an outpatient program. It’s also ideal for people who can maintain some level of normalcy in their daily routine, even though they struggle with substance abuse problems.

How Does This Program Work?

Each program operates differently, but most require at least six to eight hours of treatment daily. It takes place at a hospital, medical center, or treatment center. Treatments include individual and group therapy, evaluation of any medications and medical interventions, and working with families to help them understand the needs and goals of their loved one during treatment.

Only a medical professional can recommend a patient for day treatment programs after careful evaluations on their current substance abuse issues and previous recovery attempts. Consistent drug testing is conducted during partial hospitalization to insure that this method of drug addiction recovery continues to benefit the client.
