Pros and Cons of Each Polishing Method for Natural Stone Flooring

by | Aug 4, 2014 | Construction and Maintenance

There are several methods that can be used to create a brilliant shine on your natural stone flooring; applying barrier coatings, crystallization, grinding with diamond abrasives, and using polishing compounds and powders. It is important to understand that not all of the polishing methods will be effective on all types of flooring, and you may need to use more than one method to achieve the results you desire.

Grinding with Diamond Abrasives

This is a highly effective method, and is done by grinding the surface of your stone flooring with pads made with industrial-grade diamond grits. These are typically purchased in three or four inch diameter discs or pads, such as the MB Stone Pro Vortex Flexible Diamond Impregnated Pads. Typically, the discs are put on the bottom of the drive plate of a floor machine and adhered with Velcro. Using a low speed to sand the stone surface will remove any scratches that are present on the floor.

Polishing Compounds and Powders

Fine grains (think: table salt or granulated sugar) of tin oxide or aluminum abrasive powder is rubbed or buffed onto the surface of the stone flooring in order to make it shine. This process is similar to sanding with the diamond abrasives, except the powder is an even finer texture.

Coatings

These are readily available and commonly referred to as “waxing the surface” in order to create an artificial shine. During this process, a liquid form of urethane, acrylic or wax is applied to the surface with a sprayer or applicator. Some will be left on the floor as they are applied, while others will be buffed out in order to achieve the desired shine. This may also be done is done with a floor machine, but is not recommended for any type of porous stone.

Crystallization

This is a process where a chemical called fluorosilicate is sprayed onto the stone, then buffed in with steel wool pads. This creates new, glassy crystals on the surface of the flooring.

Taking proper care of your natural stone flooring will help it keep a brilliant shine for years to come. It will also help to remove any scratches or other imperfections that may be present in the flooring. Most importantly, be sure to use the proper type of material for the type of flooring that you have.
