Your child deserves a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums

As a parent there are many things you have to know to ensure that your child grows up to be happy and healthy, knowing how to look after their teeth when they are young will promote dental health as the years go by and they mature into adults.

The tissues in an infant’s mouth need to be kept clean so that they are not irritated and become infected. The tissues can often be torn from the constant use of a pacifier or bottle, Thrush; a yeast infection can rapidly gain a foothold and cause significant pain to the infant.

Normally babies begin to cut their teeth at age 6 or 7 months, but there are many instances of teething beginning much earlier. The first teeth to show are usually the lower front teeth and they slowly continue until at perhaps three years of age they have their full set. Long before all 20 teeth have emerged, the child should have had visits to a Dental Clinic On Long Island and be following a brushing routine.

Teeth grow, and as they do the brush needed to clean them changes as well. Once the teeth are actually touching it is time to introduce flossing to the routine as well. Once you have taught the child not to swallow the toothpaste but to spit it out, then you can start using fluoride tooth paste.

Children love to show their independence, even at a very early age. Although you may actually brush the child’s teeth for them, once you have finished let them do it again. Although your child will soon be able to actually brush their teeth properly, it never hurts for you, the parent to make a little inspection. It takes no time with soft baby teeth for a cavity to start which means a trip to the dental clinic on Long Island. When you inspect the job your child did independently, make sure you applaud their efforts and for a job well done.

Although your child will lose his or her first teeth, treat them as if they are the last teeth they ever get. These first teeth are as important as the permanent teeth as they are necessary to promote proper speech and eating.

Adelberg and Montalvan Pediatric Dental Clinic on Long Island understand how important the parents are in developing the proper dental hygiene habits for their children. You are welcome to call for an appointment.
